Ground-Truthing: Getting-out-of-the-Self Thought Experiment 3.2.3
“Getting out of the self” leads to moral Growth, but focus on the self to the exclusion of others leads to Decay. Doctors working with those suffering from depression often use medical interventions, but cognitive therapists also recommend retraining the mind to focus outside of the self in order to regain the habits of emotional and mental health. Adult companions of children model what it means to be human by example in their every word and deed, in their tone of voice and their gestures, and in the atmosphere surrounding them. How can adults show the children around them examples of getting out of themselves and seeing others as real?
What attitudes and behaviors can be examples of seeing our neighbors to be as real as ourselves?
What attitudes and behaviors can be examples of seeing strangers, including those who are far away or who seem to be entirely different, to be just as human as ourselves?
What attitudes and behaviors can be examples of seeing nature and other life as a form of reality that humans need to respect?
